Summary: The year is 1776. The American Revolutionary War is just beginning, and young Sophia Calderwood finds herself caught in a war of her own. British-occupied New York is forced to submit under England's rule, and with her brother William off fighting in the colonial army, Sophia isn't sure what to do now that a British officer has been quartered in their own home. And when tragedy strikes, Sophia must decide for herself how much loyalty to her country really matters.
Violence/Disturbing Images: Considering this novel takes place during the Revolutionary War, there are references to and descriptions of soldiers dying on the battlefield, spies being hung, and the deplorable conditions on board prison ships.
Sensuality/Nudity: Main character has a minor crush on a soldier; servants gossip about which officers are most handsome, who's courting who, etc. Nothing excessive.
Profanity: One use of "Dear God!"; mention of people swearing, though no words are articulated.
Morality: Undercover spies on both sides lie frequently; themes of loyalty and honor as well as betrayal and revenge play a role in this book.
Sophia's War was an interesting read and a realistic window into the thoughts and struggles of the human heart when faced with a controversy. The author did a fantastic job of combining historical themes with an exciting, interesting storyline. Definitely recommend this for any fellow history buffs!!
Overall Recommendation: 12+
