Peak by Roland Smith

Summary: The realization that he shouldn’t have scaled that skyscraper hit Peak Marcello a little too late. After being apprehended by the New York State police, Peak is taken to court where the authorities insist on making an example of the unruly 14-year-old. But the final verdict is not quite what Peak was expecting. Given into the custody of Joshua Wood the rock climbing legend, who also happens to be his father, Peak finds himself wrapped up in a campaign to put the youngest climber on Mount Everest. Only that climber is him. But does Peak really have what it takes to reach to the top?

Violence/Disturbing Images: Moderate; several people die attempting to scale Mount Everest; mention of corpses being seen near the top of the mountain where they can't be retrieved.

Sensuality/Nudity: Minimal; Main character was born out of wedlock.

Profanity: Moderate; One use of “d—g”, two “c—p”, one “pain in the a—“, one “h—“.

Morality: Little; Several of the minor characters are natives of Tibet and practice Buddhism; characters pray often--though it's never specified to who exactly they pray to.

I absolutely loved this book; the author’s style of writing, the way in which the story was told through Peak’s colorful thoughts and imaginings was absolutely perfect. The heartwarming conclusion came as a complete surprise to me, but it could not have been better done! If it weren't for the objectionable language, I'd give this book a 10/10!

Overall Recommendation: Ages 12+
