Hard Gold by Avi

Summary: Early Whitcomb wants more than anything to head west to join the Colorado Gold Rush. With the family farm at stake if the mortgage can't be paid off, Uncle Jesse has already gone ahead to try and strike it rich. But Early and the family haven't heard anything from him in months, and the tales going around about Uncle Jesse are worrying to say the least... Early must follow his uncle out west if only to satisfy his own belief in Jesse's innocence.

Violence/Disturbing Images: Minimal. Character is nearly run over by a heard of buffalo but escapes; mention made of a man killed in a bar fight

Sensuality/Nudity: Minimal. Character references another character as her "sweetheart."

Profanity: None. Mention of characters swearing, no language recorded.

Morality: High, with special emphasis on the destructive effects of greed. Only negative example of morality would be how Early defies his parents' wishes and runs away to Colorado.

Other: Characters enter a bar and are offered a drink by the bartender (which they refuse). Drunk men are seen smoking and gambling.

An excellent story from the days of the Colorado Gold Rush (yes, there was one other than the famed California Gold Rush) and sobering reminder of the dangers of what happens when one's heart is taken over by greed.

Overall Recommendation: Ages 12+

God bless!
