Summary: Kaz, Adriana, Dante, and Star have no idea why they, a group of amateur divers, have been chosen out of thousands to be a part of Poseidon Oceanographic Institution's summer internship program. The answer soon becomes clear when the kids realize that something strange is going on at the research center. The people running the program are hiding something... something big. The kids don't realize what they've gotten themselves into... until they make the biggest discovery of their lives. A discovery that could very well cost them their lives.
Violence/Disturbing Images: Moderate. Characters are attacked by a shark; character experiences a painful underwater phenomena called the bends; character is drowned in a diving accident; divers search for and recover dead body; character is killed in an underwater explosion; sailor falls from the rigging to his death; description of historical attack by pirates involving descriptions of looting, burning, and people dying. A little on the gory side;
Sensuality/Nudity: Minimal. Several of the boys are a little starstruck by a pretty woman who is described as looking like a supermodel.
Profanity: Minimal. Characters use minor insults with words such as "idiot" and "dork"; one use of "Oh my G**"
Morality: Characters are disrespectful toward adults, who admittedly deserve little respect, but nonetheless are the kids' elders. Characters call them names and speak rudely of them. Qualities of loyalty and friendship are displayed. The dangers of greed are discussed. No mention of God or religion.
An adventurous read with relatable characters and a captivating plot. The violence may be a little intense for younger readers, but overall an excellent story! I loved the vivid descriptions of the aquatic world and educational details of how divers cope underwater. The mystery and history interspersed between chapters was a superb touch! Definitely something to think about picking up on your next library visit!
Overall Recommendation: Ages 12+
