Best Foot Forward by Joan Bauer

Summary: (on cover of book) After a life-altering summer on the road, Jenna Boller is dripping with newfound maturity. She has a job she loves at Gladstone shoes, a best friend who makes her laugh, and a dysfunctional family she's learning how to handle. Jenna feels ready for anything—until Tanner Cobb, a guy with a past, a police record, and dangerously good looks, walks into her life. And that's just the beginning. Jenna likes to be in control, but that's not easy when she's suddenly surrounded by crises, including a shoe empire on the verge of crumbling. Tanner's street smarts seem to be what Jenna needs, but can she trust him enough when the going gets tough?

Violence/Disturbing Images: None

Sensuality/Nudity: Girl calls a guy "hot"; character has multiple girlfriends; a teenage couple kisses, character has a conversation about "chemistry"

Profanity: What in G**'s name, use of "My G**"

Morality:

Other: At an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, the group leader ends with a recitation of the "Serenity Prayer"

In conclusion, Best Foot Forward was a good read, though I have to say after reading its prequel, Rules of the Road, I was a little disappointed. Best Foot Forward still retained the humorous tidbits that result from delving into the thoughts of a teenager, but if you ask me, it wasn't nearly as great a read. The added romance did nothing for the book and I rather wish the author left it out altogether, and when compared to the plotline of its sister novel, Best Foot Forward seemed a little too rushed and too simple. Problems unfolded late in the book and were resolved rather too quickly. But despite these negativities, Best Foot Forward was still a well-written, touching story.

Overall Recommendation: Ages 12+
