Summary: Gerta's life fell apart the day the Berlin Wall was built. Her father and brother, having crossed the border the day before, were trapped in West Berlin and not allowed to return. Between the East Berlin government, the Stasi, and the wall itself, Gerta was nothing more than a prisoner in her own city. It seems hopeless that she will ever see her family together again... until one day she spots her father on the other side of the wall. He has a plan to reunite, but it's not at all safe. Gerta is faced with a difficult decision before her and must determine how far she is willing to go if she ever wants to get back her family and her freedom.
Violence/Disturbing Images: Moderate. Mention of a person being killed after jumping out of a tall building while trying to escape over the border; several characters are shot by the Stasi; character is interrogated by the Stasi and comes home with minor injuries.
Sensuality/Nudity: Minimal. Mention of main character's older brother having a girlfriend.
Profanity: None. Character swears but no specific words are articulated.
Morality: Characters intentionally deceive the Stasi in order to escape East Berlin. Gerta's mother attends church, but not often, as the government looks down on church-goers.
One of my favorite historical fiction books, covering a topic that excites every reader's interest: Escape! Gerta is a lovable character who rises above her fears and stands strong in the face of difficulties. There is quite a bit of peril involved, and the suspense will have you holding your breath in anticipation!
Overall Recommendation: Ages 12+
