Summary: In this first book of the Shepherd Suspense series, Ex-CIA agent John Cross has recently begun a new life as a follower of Christ and is only trying to forget about the life he left behind. But when his paths cross with a brave reporter and a terrorist set on getting revenge, John is brought face-to-face with his unsavory past and discovers the answer to his biggest question: Can a man truly change?
Violence/Disturbing Images: Moderate. Several fistfights, one involving a knife, two high-speed car chases, descriptions of a terrorist attempt to execute an American reporter, multiple gunfights (although main character is reluctant to use a gun and refuses to shoot to kill), an explosion. No one is killed, but a few are injured and those injuries are described, though not too graphically.
Sensuality/Nudity: Minimal. Two characters start to have feelings for each other, and their thoughts about each other are related every so often. Very mild, nothing inappropriate.
Profanity: None. Mention of people swearing, but no words actually printed.
Morality: As main character is a Christian and pastors a small church, he tries to live according the Bible, frequently prays and learns biblical lessons along the way.
As a whole, I would definitely recommend this book to any teen or young adult! The characters were well-developed and relatable, and the message of the power of Christ’s forgiveness was refreshing and challenging to me. The intense, upbeat action combined with an easy-to-follow, though by no means simple, plot, made this book a great read!
Overall Recommendation: Ages 14+
God bless and stay tuned for posts on the next two books in the Shepherd Suspense trilogy!
